Carrigeen Castle, County Tipperary, in August 1986.
Built on a strategic hill overlooking Cahir Castle. There was a sixteenth century fortification on the site, which appears in Pacata Hibernia.
According to the owner, at the time of my visit, it was built by James Galdie Butler in 1685 and was used as a prison during the 1798 rebellion and later used as a prison of remand from 1837-1846. It then became the property of Lieutenant Colonel Richard Butler, Charteris of Cahir, and was purchased by the owner’s grandfather, David Butler, in 1919.
The fortress structure, as we see it now, is mainly early nineteenth century.
