Grantstown Castle, Co. Tipperary

Grantstown Castle, County Tipperary, in May 1988.
With the proud castle owner, standing in front of his modern yett.
One of the big success stories in Irish tower house history, Grantstown has been beautifully restored, to such an extent that its Irish crenellations have been reinstated, since these photographs were taken.
When we saw it, the spiral stairs had gone, there was a vault over the second floor and in general it was in reasonable condition for an abandoned building.
There was a terrifying climb up an iron pole to the floor above the vault, which was/is arcaded.
A fireplace had been inserted at a later date in front of a window.
