Ferrycarrig Castle, Co. Wexford

Ferrycarrig Castle, County Wexford, in June 1986.
Strategically sited on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Slaney and controlling an important choosing point.
Tower houses are frequently found on rich agricultural lands and it is sometimes overlooked that they were also built along rivers, such as this one.
Rivers were the motorways of medieval times and by controlling them, trade was also controlled.
